yea you should use an sd card or something, but you can also back up files like app data, videos, pictures, apk files by using google drive or something similar once everything is backed up you can delete all those stuff leaving you a decent amount of free space. just dont forget your account though lol

oh yea, test this first by uploading a random pic to google drive and deleting it at your phone and downloading it back to your phone. if it works well, it worked
