HTC Desire HD — Android update ?

Hi, I have The HTC desire HD, formerly Orange but has been made to accept a Talk Talk sim. Running Android 2.3.5 Ginger Bread.
For the last year or so I have been using Barclay Banks Mobile App until it stopped working about 2 weeks ago. After numerous and lengthy phone calls to them they now tell me that they have updated their software and it now requires Android 4 or higher. The phone must also not be rooted for their app to work.
Is their any way I can update my phone ?

I have seen various ways on the web but it requires the phone to be rooted which defeats the objective of using the Barclay App which is very useful.

Any hints or tips and solutions would be great................ really at my wits end with this :(

If you really want to update your Android device , before starting to do , you need to backup all phone data on computer ,
